Parliament
Parliament is the Israeli Air Force's mission plan and control application, the app was intended to serve as its main tactical tool.

As the lead UX/UI designer, I successfully led a team of three designers in developing Parliament, the Israeli Air Force's primary tactical tool for mission planning and control. This application was designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the military landscape, encompassing air, ground, ocean, and underground domains, from individual soldiers in the field to the entire operational area and campaign.

Diverse User Base
The system catered to users with varying backgrounds, digital literacy levels, and roles within the Israeli Air Force, ranging from commanders to intelligence clerks. I had to ensure the interface accommodated all users, considering their different needs and expertise.
Scope and Data Presentation

Parliament aimed to cover a broad range of actions and present relevant data in a clear and accessible manner. Managing the extensive scope of information and designing intuitive interfaces were critical aspects of the project.

Compatibility

The application needed to seamlessly integrate with existing systems and terminologies within the Israeli Air Force, ensuring compatibility and a smooth transition for users.
Furthermore, Parliament is one of three systems managed under a unified framework that continues the work of the other systems. Therefore, it should maintain consistency with them, as some of the content within Parliament is also present in the other systems, allowing for seamless integration between them.

User-Centric Design

Recognizing that all users were fluent Hebrew speakers and unlikely to be colorblind, I prioritized a user-centric approach to create a comfortable and efficient experience for each user group.

Structure and abilites

Data Analysis

Given the map-based nature of the system, I dedicated considerable effort to defining and understanding the core entity of the mission. By analyzing user perspectives and defining mission elements, I ensured that the system effectively met the diverse needs of its users.

Look and Feel

I led the team through an extensive development process, starting from initial wireframes and progressing towards a comprehensive wireframe flow. The final stage involved carefully customizing the system's coloring and styling to suit the requirements of different user groups.

Work with the client

The collaboration with the client was ongoing, starting from meetings with product managers and discussions on content construction, sketching wireframes, designing the content, and delivering them in a customized style guide. This was followed by QA sessions with developers and implementing fixes for each piece of content.

Through the Airforce exercises, I observed how users interacted with the system and gathered insights for further improvements and enhancements.

Results and Impact

The implementation of Parliament has had a significant impact. It has enhanced operational efficiency by consolidating mission planning and control into a single system, improving coordination among units. The comprehensive overview provided by Parliament has improved situational awareness, enabling better decision-making based on real-time data. Users have expressed high satisfaction and engagement with the user-centric design approach. Seamless integration with existing systems has facilitated a smooth transition for users, ensuring compatibility and minimizing disruptions.

Impact

Reflection and Lessons Learned

The development of Parliament has provided valuable insights. Working with a client with fixed expectations presented challenges, but introducing a fresh perspective prioritizing user convenience added value. Effective communication and advocating for user-centric design were crucial in addressing these challenges. Collaboration with the development team required aligning content with the design vision through multiple corrections and close coordination. Clear communication and effective collaboration were essential to ensuring consistency between design and development.

Placing users at the center of the design process, iterative development, and user testing have been key in refining the design and incorporating user feedback. Balancing complexity and simplicity and customizing the interface for different user groups have enhanced inclusivity. Overall, the development of Parliament has resulted in improved efficiency, user satisfaction, and valuable lessons for future projects.
